Sports Cards Grading Is GMA A Serious Contender?

GMA Grading and Authentication    Home Of The $2 Grade

Are We Getting What We Pay For?

After coming across 1,00'0's of ungraded Baseball cards I had to learn the world of Sports Cards grading rather quickly. As went through all of the major graders of course as a lifetime CHEAPSKATE I immediately noticed the services of GMA

Grading services at $2.00 bucks a card. So I sent off few ROOKIES for grading to see what kind of grade they would receive. I also sent off a few to PSA and a couple to Beckett for mostly comparative analysis.

I soon noticed something strange as I began to sell the cards. I noticed for the most part that the majority of the Sports Collectors community really didn't affiliate with GMA. Since I didn't have a personal web presence to offer the cards I sent them out on consignment with some of the largest Card sellers on eBay. To my surprise few of them even accepted cards with the GMA grade attached. The others with Beckett and PSA grades went out and sold very well for substantial profit via consignment. So I looked into a little more. I quickly noticed why, the GMA grade across the board systematically sold for less, a lot less!

I read few articles/reviews on the service as a follow up I found a surprising number of reviews were customers disagreed with the grading placed on their card(s). I also looked at the others and noticed that their reviews were almost the exact opposite, especially the big three
  • BCCG - Beckett Collectors Club Grading
  • PSA - Proffesional Sports Autheticators
  • SGC - Sportscard Gurantee
In their reviews for the most part over 95% of their grades were taken at face value. With their complaints being  more about pricing (too high), shipping or casing,  yet like I said they're grading was hardly ever question like GMA.  So from an unbiased perspective if you have had a good experience with GMA send me an email I will write about it as well. All in all I wonder when dealing with GMA should I revert back to the age old rule; You get what you pay for? Maybe?

Unfortunately once they are graded we can't ungrade them so it is something to look into thoroughly

Dodger History

Josh Beckett doing his thing!

The History Of The Dodgers

The team currently known as the Dodgers was formed (as the "Brooklyn Grays") in 1883 by real estate magnate and baseball enthusiast Charles Byrne who convinced his brother-in-law Joseph Doyle and casino operator Ferdinand Abell to start the team with him. Byrne set up a grandstand on Fifth Avenue and named it Washington Park in honor of George Washington. The team played in the minor Inter-State Association of Professional Baseball Clubs that first season. Doyle became the first manager of the team, which drew 6,000 fans to its first home game on May 12, 1883 against the Trenton team. The team won the league title after the Camden Merritt club disbanded on July 20 and Brooklyn picked up some of its better players. The Grays were invited to join the American Association for the following season.

After winning the AA championship in 1889, the team moved to the National League and won the 1890 NL Championship, the first Major League team to win consecutive championships in two different leagues. Their success during this period was partly attributed to their absorbing the players of the defunct New York Metropolitans and Brooklyn Ward's Wonders. In 1899, the Dodgers merged with the Baltimore Orioles, as Baltimore manager Ned Hanlon became the club's new skipper and Charles Ebbets became the primary owner of the team.

The team's nickname
By 1890 New Yorkers (Brooklyn was a separate city until it became a borough in 1898) routinely called anyone from Brooklyn a "trolley dodger", due to the vast network of street car lines criss-crossing the borough as people dodged trains to play on the streets. When the second Washington Park burned down early in the 1891 season, the team moved to nearby Eastern Park, which was bordered on two sides by street car tracks. That's when the team was first called the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers. That was soon shortened to Brooklyn Dodgers.[3] Possibly because of the "street character" nature of Jack Dawkins, the "Artful Dodger" in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, sportswriters in the early 20th Century began referring to the Dodgers as the "Bums".

Two Dodger greats on the same card !

1959 Baltimore Orioles - Outfielder - Dick Williams

After playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers for four seasons Dick was traded to the Orioles where his full potential was realized. A great ball player during his era a great card to have in any collection.
